Hello and welcome back to DOOM!’s exploration of the Comic Book film genre hosted by Aaron Fever and JJ Hawkins.
This month we go freakin ZANY!!!!! It is the second podcast of the year, it is the second Superman film we have studied, and WE ARE WATCHING TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE SAME MOVIE! That’s right, I am watching the theatrical cut of the film, and Aaron is watching the more recent Donner cut. Is one better than the other? Do either of them hold up to scrutiny? Will either of us KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!?!
Its time for a little truth, justice and the American way!
I think that the production designer for the 90’s learned everything from these guys. Stark lighting, black clothing, and shiny leather accents. Yep, that’s the 90’s all right.

Great episode, I forgot how much of the Lester cut bored the shit out of me… But I am one of those who listens to the podcast sans movie but I remember the scenes in question lol
Pacific Rim does not fit this podcast, but I will watch it with you anytime, buddy. Mic on or not.
Since “Well, Actually” Guy is apparently my defining characteristic, Zod was created back in ’61, about seventeen years before the first Donner movie. Which is new to me because I assumed he was another Otto Binder creation, along with Brainiac, back in the ’50s.
I think it’s important to note that Christopher Nolan had comparatively little to do with the script of Man of Steel. From what I’ve read, Nolan only provided a rough outline and then David Goyer came in and shat all over it with his tin-eared dialogue and inability to write proper characters (see Blade 3…or don’t; I wouldn’t blame you).
I usually just listen to these commentaries like a podcast. Setting up the movie and keeping it synced is just too much hassle for me. That, and I don’t always own the movie on DVD.
I would never categorize you as a “Well, Actually” guy. You keep us honest! I had no idea about Zod, I thought I was right, but I admit I am more of a Marvel guy.
I was aware that Nolan had not much to do with the actual script, but the tone and universe were crafted by him. His fingerprints can be seen in the darkness all over that flick. While I think that that could be interesting, Superman has to serve as a beacon in that world, not be dragged down into it. However, that is a discussion when we get to it. We still have two more of these suckers to get through.
