Tease Me, Baby! – The Return of Beavis and Butthead

A lot of things happened at San Diego Comic Con this year, and many announcements were made. Somewhere between Dan Didio taking heat for DC comics’ lack of women, Matt Fraction bringing back the Defenders (with Iron Fist, Yay!), and the deafening sound of fanboy “SQUEE” arising from the consoles playing Arkham City, came the word that Beavis and Butthead were returning to MTV.

I always had mixed emotions about Beavis and Butthead. While the show could be very funny, it was often uneven and downright cruel. However, when Beavis and Butthead Do America came out, I thought it was one of the funniest films I had seen in a long time.

I wonder, has Mike Judge refined his comic sensibilities in the last decade or so? Did King of the Hill’s more subtle tone inform this rebirth of the show that started his career? Let’s check it out.

-Don’t mess with what works

I like the fact that the look of the show is the same. They haven’t updated Beavis and Butthead for the new generation. They are not EXTREME, or ULTIMATE, or even ALL STAR, it’s just the show we all know and love. Many bonus points go to the return of Stewart and the Winger shirt. Rumor has it that when that shirt first appeared, Kip Winger broke up the band as he realized they were not cool.

-Yeah, entry

The basic plot of this preview seems to revolve around the fact that the boys tried to penetrate an action figure’s butt with a screw. The fact that I know all of you are repeating and laughing at least three words in that sentence tells me that Beavis and Butthead are still relevant.

-I am the great Cornholio!

Cornholio just makes me laugh. There is nothing smart about it, I know. But something gets me on a purely juvenile level. Smart move putting him in the preview.

-I’m A Whore, Hello

Well there goes my streak for having never seen any of the Jersey Shore. Alas.

In all honesty, this was always my least favorite part of the show. If the story was good, I always wanted to follow the narrative and not watch videos with people talking over them. It is like MST3K meets the Headbanger’s Ball. If I wanted to watch either of those, back when they were on, I would have. The combination never worked for me. It was less peanut butter and chocolate, and more pickle relish and strawberries. Still, the commentary is sharp and gives me hope for the writing of the show. If the show can stay this sharp, I might just change my mind.

-Finally!

He finally gets some TP for his bunghole. It is about time people listen! Plus, this is a weak excuse for another pic of Cornholio. He makes me laugh, I tells ya!

-TP for all

Hey! A cult of Cornholio worshipers! I have a place to belong at last.

All in all, this worked for me. If the writing can stay as sharp as this, I will be very impressed. Gone are the days of Frog Baseball, and back are the days when we can stupidly laugh at words like “duty.”

Heh heh….I wrote duty.
