Golden Brickies to reward families with most creative LEGO® Star Wars™ builders

Today, LEGO® Star Wars™ announces its first ever intergalactic national ‘Oscar-style’ awards just for fans! The ‘Golden Brickies’ Awards launch today on the LEGO Facebook page to celebrate the best fan created content for all the creative Jedi builders, budding photographers and film makers out there.

In homage to the legendary movie franchise and upcoming Episode VII, LEGO® is inviting families across the UK to take part in this epic event which will culminate in an exclusive red carpet celebration event at LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort Hotel with other amazing prizes up for grabs.

I’m a big fan of some of the more inventive Flickr groups. Yesterday the Flickr blog highlighted one particularly brilliant one called LEGO Album Covers and it does exactly what you think it does. There are some fantastically re-created covers done with our favourite brick toys and I can only applaud the dedication it takes to bring these pictures to plastic.

Here are ten of my favourites from the 221 pictures (and rising) in the group.

As I’ve stated before, Flickr can be a fantastic place to waste some time. I often go searching for weird and wonderful images there to be both entertained and inspired for my own photography ideas.

Today I decided to try and find some Superman imagery and stumbled across a group called Superman Toys. I thought it… unusual to see a group dedicated to taking pictures of one superhero’s toys so I had a look around, although as the group admin was keen to point out “not just Superman, we want your Lex Luthors, Doomsdays and Lois Lanes too!”.

People, there be gold in them there hills. I thought I should share some of these fun finds with you, our dear DOOM readers, so please enjoy the following selection of nuggets.

Yesterday our DOOM leader, and Jack Nicholson look-a-like, John drew my attention on Twitter to a link. It brought me to the Flickr account of Ben Heine, an artist currently residing in Brussels, Belgium. Being the official Flickr connoisseur of DOOM, I was fascinated to see what John was so impressed by.

It turns out Ben has a rather gifted knack of mixing pencil drawings with real life photography. It’s a simple premise but an effective one none the less. By drawing images on to a scrap of paper and angling it at just right spot he manages to create a little magic within the world around us.

All the pictures are his own and the drawings too. There are currently 53 images in this group that he has created so far but he says that he tries to update it every week with a new one.

For your viewing pleasure I’ve compiled my favourites from the collection for you here but go check out the full selection (at this link) if you like what you see. You’ll find some insights that he has written about the process and the pictures themselves.

Sitting in work as I often do on a Monday evening I began to look for anything to brighten my day. With little stimuli available I decided to take a browse through Flickr.com. This has regularly been a time-waster for me in the office for several reasons. Some of which I will list now because lists please me on an obssessive compulsive level.

1. It is one of the few sites in my office not blocked by the evil IT overlord.
2. I am very interested in photography.
3. It has pretty pictures.
4. Lists look better with even numbers.

I have a Flickr account myself but don’t know many other people who do, as such I browse stranger’s accounts. It’s interesting both in a “I’m being nosey and looking at someone’s life” kind of way and also in a “wow, I wonder how they got the picture” way too.

Anyway, I’m rambling. The point is, to interest me on this gloomy Monday afternoon I searched on Flickr the word “Monday”. From this search I found a group called “Bench Monday“. I was torn. I like benches. I dislike Mondays. I decided to browse anyway.

Bench Mondays have a manifesto. It goes something like this:

Rules: Stand on a bench. Make sure it’s Monday. Wear something pretty.

PS. Only pictures added to the group on the day called Monday will be accepted. However, pictures do not actually have to be TAKEN on Monday.

PPS. Extra points for live props. Double points for chickens.

PPPS. STANDING. That means your feet on a bench, and your body in an upright position. Stop emailing me. Please try to use common sense, darlings

Simple enough. Although obviously some people have been having a problem with the standing thing. Maybe they didn’t get the memo.

It’s an odd passion for people to join forces on but nevertheless it has interesting results. I’ve picked some of my favourite from the bunch below to share with you. Foot fetishists will get a kick out of this.
