Ant-Man is about to be released in July. That’s 3 months away. Considering how little we’ve seen of the footage so far you have to wonder if this film is in trouble. There has already been lots of news reports about delays and reshoots, not to mention the infamous changing of director last year.

The positives are that after over 7 years of work, the film is finally here. Paul Rudd gets to be a super-hero. Michael Douglas is in a Marvel movie as Hank Pym. Evangeline Lilly gets to be in a movie without elf ears or having to make gooey eyes at a dwarf.

I’m a little nervous, as you can probably tell, but I still have hope. A full two and a half minute trailer has been released today. Lets take a look shall we?

– Talk To The Animals, Walk With The Animals

Ant-Man’s ant power is something that is mostly forgotten about these days in the comics but it did feature much more heavily in the early days of his comic appearances. They seem to be a big part of this movie now too.

– Out of the Way of the Gun

Moments like this, of Ant-Man literally dodging a bullet make this film feel like a contender. Lots of people have talked about selling the idea of Ant-Man and his powers being a difficult prospect. Shots like this are cool enough to calm some of those nerves.

– Jackets Are Everywhere

This bit is kind of confusing. Yellowjacket was the alias for Hank Pym for a period in the comics, and not a bad guy. Darren Cross is a villain in the comics but he did not have an Ant-Man-like suit. They’ve arrived at this bit and it’s not the worst thing in the world but it is too familiar. The Iron Man films made a point of making his bad guys have his technology. It’s a morality tale about power and responsibility (don’t tell Spidey) and, well, we’ve seen it before. It’s a bit disappointing for them to take the same tact this time. I know Pym doesn’t exactly have a great rogues gallery but I think they could have done better.

– Revenge of the Fat Controller

We’ve all had this nightmare, right? Just me? OK.

I will say though, I wonder how people will react to the ridiculousness of what looks to be the final battle of the film.

———————————————————————————————————————

Overall: Oh god, I’m really not sure. This could go either way. I doubt it will be a huge flop, Marvel is a trusted brand at this point and people love Rudd, but it could be the first Marvel film to under perform. I worry. I worry. This trailer did not reassure me.

What a long and strange trip it’s been. Production of this film started back in 2006. Ant-Man was originally supposed to be part of the line-up in the first Avengers movie. Edgar Wright (the original writer/director) unfortunately took so long to get the film off the ground, and with rumoured creative disagreements, left the project last year. The film was then handed to comedic director Peyton Reed, with the likes of Bring It On and The Break-Up on his CV. Worryingly, star Paul Rudd (who was already cast) was then allowed to edit the script with his friend Adam McKay who has Anchorman 2 and The Other Guys on his CV.

So what kind of film are we likely to see now with so many cooks working on the broth? It’s hard to tell, so pay extra special attention to the first teaser trailer released last night.

– Don’t Worry, He’s White, They Won’t Shoot Him

Unlike a lot of Marvel‘s line-up, Scott Lang is a criminal. It will make Ant-Man a bit different both as a film but also as a character, making it especially interesting when he eventually teams up with the likes of super-do-gooder Captain America.

– The Hank Tank

Another plot point which will make Ant-Man stand out is the fact that he will be a second generation superhero. Hank Pym, played by the great Michael Douglas, is the original Ant-Man. How does that effect Scott’s use of power and motives considering that he will have a mentor to guide him?

– Damnit Janet!

Evangeline Lilly will play Hope Van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym and the original Wasp Janet Van Dyne. Considering the actress they’ve gotten to play her, I’d be shocked if we didn’t see Hope take up her mother’s mantel at some point.

– The Money Shot

This is the iconic moment. If I had a dollar for every time Ant-Man has been drawn on a comic cover riding into battle on the back of a flying ant I’d probably be richer than all the comic cover artists who have drawn Ant-Man riding into battle on the back of a flying ant.

———————————————————————————————-

Overall: God, it’s really hard to gauge much from this. You know that there is going to be a lot of comedy elements with all the talent involved but little of that is shown here. Neither is there much of the action shown either. Considering how much we’ve seen of other films coming out this year or even further away, if this is all they have to show for it then they must be struggling to get Ant-Man finished on time. I hope they pull it off, otherwise their brave step of letting Edgar Wright go might have shot them in the foot.
