The movie is directed by a relative newcomer, Jon Watts, who has mainly directed TheOnion.com videos. It’s co-written by John Francis Daley and if you’re wondering why that name is familiar, he was the main kid in Freaks & Geeks. But don’t worry, he’s one of 6 people who are credited as writing the screenplay. Have I made you nervous yet?

Ok, lets see our first trailer.

– The Ultimate Bait and Switch

If you believe everything you read on the internet, IMDB would have you know that popular young actress Zendaya is playing a character named Michelle. Sure. I personally think she bares a resemblance to a certain red-head from the Ultimate Spider-Man universe.

But hey, Aaron, that’s the Ultimate universe. What has that got to do with…

– C’mon guys

Well here is where I’m a little confused and very annoyed. This chubby best friend of Spider-Man, who loves Lego, is listed as… Ned Leeds?! Are you kidding me?

I’m supposed to think this guy is going to turn into the Hobgoblin at some point? No. He is CLEARLY Ganke Lee from the Ultimate Spider-Man comics (and now 616). Either Marvel is playing real hard to get with details or it doesn’t know what it is doing. I’m really hoping for the former based on track-record. But if this was Fox or Warner Bros I’d be spitting venom right now.

– Death From Above

Welcome to our big bad guy for the movie, The Vulture. It will be interesting if they play with any of the age stuff in The Vulture’s lore but either way he’s played by Michael Keaton so that’s pretty damn cool.

He has gone from playing Batman to Birdman and now a bird… man.

– Web Armpits!

It’s the first time we see them in live-action form and I, for one, am jazzed about it.

OVERALL: Honestly, I have to admit I expected a trailer that would get me more excited. It revealed lots of character stuff, like how Peter is being treated like a child by Tony Stark and being mentored slightly, and who his friends are etc. But I’ve seen enough of RDJ at this stage and the characters aren’t who they say they are so… meh?
I still want to see the film, I’m excited for Tom Holland in the roll, but if I knew nothing before this trailer I don’t think I’d go to see Spider-Man: Homecoming based on this footage alone.

At some point, we’ll get it right…

In BIRDMAN, Michael Keaton plays an actor who is famous for playing a superhero in his younger days and is struggling to be taken seriously in other roles now. It’s not an autobiography, it’s just excellent casting but you might be forgiven for thinking the former.

There was some confusion when the project was announced due to the striking similarity of the titular character to Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. This was just accidental and more a coincidence that they wanted to create a character similar to Batman but ended up even more similar to a different character! You’ll see from the trailer, though, superficial similarities are where the connections end. This is its own beast.

– Big Bird

Our lead in this story is slowly losing his mind so this could either be a hallucination or a clip from his old movies.

I’m going to guess it’s all in his mind.

– Why Front?

Apparently this was filmed in the actual Times Square, New York.

Keaton deserves some sort of award for this alone. Nobody looks good in those.

– All of the Lights, All of the Lights

We don’t get to see too much in this trailer but BIRDMAN already looks like a beautifully shot film.

Some moments remind me of Gondry’s work on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (no higher praise can come from me).

– Batman v Hulk

Michael Keaton versus Ed Norton. Bruce Wayne versus Bruce Banner. Batman versus Hulk. Fight of the century!

It may not live up to the battle my teenage self would have imagined.

Overall: This looks great. I was into the idea of the story when I first heard it but this trailer has me chomping at the bit to see it now. I can’t wait.

Being a remake, the broad strokes are the same but the details are different. Omni Consumer Products is now simply OmniCorp. There’s a thick atmosphere of drone technology in urban environments, which is a hot topic right now. Murphy’s demise is changed for a more PG audience (and lets face it, that original firing squad shouldn’t scar another generation of children!) and his family seems to be in it much more. The lead is a Thor and Mad Max 4 candidate, Joel Kinnaman and has a star-studded cast to back him, including Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Jackie Earle Haley, and Samuel L. Jackson. Let’s take a look at the trailer.

Family Man
One thing I’m interested to see in this movie is Murphy’s struggle to hold onto his humanity, and how his family will impact that journey. His wife and kid seem to be central to that journey and it’s something the original never played with.

Frankenstein’s Monster
Gary Oldman plays Dr. Dennett Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop. He seems a little amoral in parts but redeemable in others so we’ll see how this movie plays out but it’s Gary Oldman, I’m sure he’ll kick ass.

Michael “Batman” Keaton is supposedly a villainous CEO of OmniCorp and seems to be a shrewd businessman, looking to capitalise on the good press and marketing possibilites of Robocop. In a cool nod, the original armour design shows up in the movie as a kind of Mark I form before various revisions leave us with…

Back in Black
I really dig the armour design. Granted, I really prefer the silver version from earlier but this is just as cool. The stealth aspects could lend to some really cool segments plus I love that he’s more agile now. Such a huge improvement.

“Your move, creep.”
Ol’ Murphy is packing his iconic pistol but he’s still got another thigh for stuff to pop out of so he gets a sub-machine gun for dual-wielding fun!

Fan reaction has already been polarising. Hell, I spent an hour last night arguing with a fellow youtube reviewer over facebook, but I REALLY dig it! I’m pretty hyped and considering that I had no real interest in the movie before this trailer popped up, that’s saying something. Robocop will be hitting theatres Feburary 7, 2014.
