I find I start a lot of these by telling you how much I love the subject matter of the film. It’s sad to say, but once again I have to do it. I love Spider-Man. Period. Love him. I’d let him take me if he wanted to. With Spider-Man, all bets are off!

But I hated… and I’m not doing the usual geek thing of being over the top about this, I genuinely feel acid in my mouth when the subject is brought up… hated Spider-Man 3. It was an insulting piece of cinema. Don’t even try and defend it in the comments to me because I won’t respond. I’ll just add you to “the list”.

Am I happy that the franchise has been rebooted? Yes. Am I nervous this could also suck? You bet! But I like all the cast involved (and what a cast!) and who knows? Maybe they could surprise me. Maybe I’ll actually like it. Maybe I’ll die before it’s released. It’s a crazy world out there.

It’s interesting that the loss of his parents is actually being used as a character development this time around.

It’s something that was completely glossed over previously due to the replacement of his parental figures by Uncle Ben and Aunt May. I’m fascinated to see how they use it.

Another thing I like is that while Peter will be a full blown genius once again (webshooters!) they’re not dressing him in the usual geeky clothing.

It’s clear that he is one but it’s nice that he’s not a “movie nerd”. Down with stereotypes!

– Oh For F***s Sake…

I had really hoped we could skip the origin story this time a little bit. It would have been a breath of fresh air just to dive right into Peter Parker as Spider-Man.

But I guess if the bonus is some screen time with Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, then it’s a decent trade-off. As many a friend of mine has said though, if Uncle Ben is still alive at the end of the film, they’ll make things a hell of a lot more interesting.

It’s a cool idea to give us this much first-person Spider time. And hey look, there are those webshooters!

However, does anyone else get a whiff of video-game level effects? The buildings all look REALLY fake to me. Shame.

At the end of the day, the trailer does it’s job. I think it gives us a good indication as to the mood the new film is going for and the general tone. Although I’m sure there is going to be much more action than this trailer would suggest but these days action = CGI and that stuff won’t be done yet (it’s not coming out until next year!).
