Karen O and team don’t quite channel the same sort of raw energy that drips from their earlier offerings but what they lose in vitality they more than make up for in growling sneers.

Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires of the City

More of the same from the painfully hip New Yorkers. If you like their previous efforts you’ll be happy but I can’t help but think that they’re either getting a little jaded or running out of things to say.

The Strokes – Comedown Machine

I couldn’t have been more disappointed in this album. A poor mish-mash of songs that feel thrown together in a hot-minute. Considering that releasing this album got them out of their contract with RCA, the motivations for such a poor release are clear.

Le Sexoflex – The Naughty Contest

I played their previous Mixxxtape an embarrassing amount of times so I was more than excited for their second release. It feels weird to say that this is a more mature, darker album when the song I’m putting here is called “Suck Dick, Eat Cheetos” but that’s the reality of it. And if you hadn’t gathered yet it’s probably NSFW.

Everything Everything – Arc

Everything Everything are one of those bands that sneak up on you. At first, they’ll seem hard to penetrate as their music is so dense with melody but god damn it you’ll be coming back for more like it’s crack.

Haim – Days Are Gone

Without a doubt, my album of the year. Played it obsessively. These three sisters know how to bury a catchy tune into your brain. Add that to their rocking beats and interchanging vocals and you’ll be smitten before you know it. It’s a shame their music videos are so bad.

Arctic Monkeys – AM

This one got a lot of praise from other quarters but I’m gonna put my neck on the line and say that I thought it was much more hit-and-miss. But I will give them credit for finally moving their sound on from the QotSA sound-a-like funk they were in.

Rizzle Kicks – Roaring 20s

Do you get it? Because they’re 21 now. No? Fine. Britain’s premier hip-hop outfit are back with their second album and they mean business. Taking pot shots at modern life and the hypocrisy of rap misogyny. My kinda guys.

The Strypes – Snapshot

The Strypes are teenage kids from Ireland who are scaring people with their ability to write catchy blues rock from the 60s. Their album is tough to listen to from start to finish due to a lot of similar sounding songs but they’re a welcome addition to a shuffled playlist.

Brothers or Not – Pioneer

Expert pedlars of whiskey-fuelled break-up songs, Brothers or Not return with their second EP of scorchers. Some of my favourite rock songs of the past couple years are from this band and if you miss the days when Dave Grohl was able to actually write a rock song and not just a pop song with guitars, then I think you need Brothers or Not in your life. Unfortunately they don’t have a full song from the EP online so check out this taster.

Audiophilia is DOOM’s rotating musical recommendation column. It’s where we come together to give you some listening choices every month. This month Aaron Poole and Michael Harris give you their picks.

Aaron:

Brothers Or Not is an Austin, Texas based rock band that is kind of a super-group of the Texan live scene combining former members of The Tastydaclyls, Veloura, and Westbound Departure. I would be remiss to leave out that I have been a fan of both Veloura and The Tastydactyls previously and was disheartened to see them both quit music, so it’s not too surprising that I was excited and pleased to hear that this band had formed.

This new, self titled, and debut EP from the band is a good representation of this mix of musical pasts. You can hear a touch of all previous bands in the songs. Blake Rawlings takes up lead vocals once again and it’s nice to see him really let loose and power his way through some of these songs. In the past, The Tastys bordered on that pop line but Brothers Or Not is rock without a shadow of a doubt. This is the kind of stuff you want to hear in a bar and sing/shout along to.

There is a significant change of pace in the four tracks with the song “Switch”. A much moodier and slower song but in my opinion quite possibly the most enduring because of it. While the others like “C. Gaines” has that rock edge, there is something still more cutting about the lyrics and tone with “Switch” that means while it may not be as catchy as the others, it will stay with you for longer.

I heard this months pick on the radio of all places. That’s right folks, you heard it here. Radio is not dead! Not completely anyways. I tend not to listen to local radio because most stations operate on the standard model of only playing 15 songs about 50 times per day plus something classically popular every once and again. Recently, however, I’ve been giving a pretty good listen to KSPC Radio which is a very local college radio station that has a lot more freedom to play new and strange sounds (last week there was a block dedicated to Beatles covers that were specifically featured in Beatles movies, and every Friday they have a block of video game and video game related music).

That being established I was introduced to a band that I’ve been fairly enamored with over the past couple weeks: Dirty Ghosts. I really don’t know too much about the band, unfortunately. They’ve enlisted the production talents of hip-hop talent Aesop Rock for their album Metal Moon and I just really love the sound that they’re putting out. Easily the catchiest song on the album and the one that got me hooked is the first track on the album, “Ropes That Way”, another favorite of mine off the album is “19 in ’71”. If you want to do a bit of looking, the 7″ Single version of “Shout It In” is a bit better than the album with a cameo by Aesop Rock.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention one of my favorite albums of the year with Milo Greene’s Self-Titled album released in July. Lovely album that I can’t stop listening to, no matter how much it makes me nostalgic for being in a relationship and having lovey dovey feels. Here’s my favorite off of their album and slightly reminiscent of Landon Pigg, “Silent Way”.

Rather than try and name all the best albums that came out last year, I thought I’d try something a little more personal. I think my list of albums would suck anyway because, as a whole, I found 2011 a little disappointing musically. I suppose everyone is allowed an off year.

So here are my notable music thingys, kind of a list but not quite, of 2011!

Suprise Hit Of The Year:
Rizzle Kicks

This British rap duo broke out with their debut album Stero Typical in a big way. Their song “Down With The Trumpets” was one of those summer anthems that got my attention. They’ve been popping up everywhere since and have become the darlings of the UK music scene with their radio-friendly hip-hop and their infectious, youthful, fun.

The UK rap scene had been building momentum for a while but these are the first guys who I think could genuinely break America. They’re definitely a very English entity but I’d be shocked if the rest of the world don’t take to them. Don’t beleive me? See what they do with “Fly Me To The Moon“, live from someone’s back garden.

And their ability to work with remixes doesn’t end there. Rizzle Kicks‘ mixtape, which is free to download, features some great stuff. Making the likes of Lily Allen and Arctic Monkeys sound even better (or in the case of Allen, just sound good).

Personal Discovery Of The Year:
Interpol

I have a good friend who adored Interpol for years. I liked the couple singles I had heard but he was never able to convert me. I guess it was part disconnection and part adversion to Interpol fans. For the same reason I never really converted to The Smiths, Interpol fans are… well, lets say “dedicated” and leave it at that.

Their album Antics was on sale for a ridiculously low price one day and I figured I should give them the shot that my friend assured me was worth it. I remained sceptical. Then I heard this…

Sometimes you can’t describe how or why a song/album/band gets under your skin. But this did. In a big way. I listened to it on my way home from work pretty much every day for about 3 months in the spring of 2011. I became converted. There is no looking back now.

If you’ve thought they are in any way decent but never took the plunge, I implore you to do it. Don’t ignore your friends like I do.

Band I Said Goodbye To:
The Bluetones

I went into my love of this band at great length in a blog post once I had heard they were splitting up. They formed a massive amount of my teenage years and luckily, I’ve made a lot of good friends from going to their shows in my twenties.

I won’t repeat all the tear inducing gush from my blog but I will mention that I was there on their last tour, got to meet the band, had a ball, and will miss them dearly. People complain about those cynical band reformations but this is one band I’d gladly cough up money to have back.

Thank you, Bluetones, it was worth it.

Hope For The Future:
Brothers Or Not

If you don’t know who The Tastydactyls are, then we have obviously never met. Hi.

2011 was my first Tastydactyl-less year since I was introduced to the band oh… 6 years ago(?). The Texas four piece were not only a band I loved but also became some good friends of mine, when they split I became a little lost. I realise how sad that sounds, but it’s true. I travelled from Ireland to Texas on more than one occusion just to see them. They were a big deal in my life.

However, Tasty’s frontman Blake Rawlings is back(!) with a new band. Brothers Or Not are so new they only have one song up so far. But I hope to see more soon and that my faith in Rawlings’ talent stays solid.
