The Drive-In Of Doom! Spider-Man 2

Hello and welcome back to DOOM!’s exploration of the Comic Book film genre hosted by Aaron Poole and JJ Hawkins. This month we look at the second of Sam Rami’s Spider-Man trilogy, that’s right…Spider-Man 2. Aaron legendarily hates this movie and JJ considers it one of his favorites. Who is right? Who is wrong? Does either manage to sway the other? How long can I keep this series of short questions going?

I’ll bet there was a drinking game to this month’s episode, but let’s face it…I was drinking heavily when I was recording it. So, listen in and find out what that drinking game may have been. Next month, I’ll take notes or something.

As far as the Doc Oc stuff goes, I have to agree with Aaron. Granted, I haven’t read as many Spidey books as either of y’all but, self-contained in the film, it muddies his motivations up so bad that it just gets grating after a while trying to pin down his character. Molina’s performance is good, sure, but that doesn’t excuse crappy screenwriting and a failure to convey how the Doc/arms relationship works.

Also, Doc’s wife is a total example of women-in-refrigerators syndrome. She serves no real purpose in the movie other than to be killed off, pushing Doc into villainy (even though I don’t think she’s ever even mentioned again after her death and never explicitly played into his motives for completing his experiment); always thought that was really insulting and a waste of a character.

Don’t worry, Josh, I think everyone will agree with me on the Doc Ock stuff because I was right and JJ was wrong. :)

You would think that. It is that kind of wrong headed thinking that got the whole damn world in the mess we are in now.
